The second leader of the Muslims, was leading a prayer and was attacked with a poisoned weapon from a non-Muslim and the resulting wounds and impact of poison caused his death.

The man who used the poisoned weapon was known to the leader. His reason for the attack was known and he was not blamed. When a person asked if all people in his group should be punished this was refuted by the leader. The others are not to blame for what has been done here. The man attacked more Muslims during this time and he was stopped with a cloak but used his own weapon on himself and he died too.

The leader died over more than a day and in this time he was able to settle his affairs. For the 86,000 dirhams that he had in debt, he said where this would be paid back from amongst the people that owe him. He took on debt for the people but he did not lose control of his financial affairs. The people who were promised to be paid back, were paid back.

He asked one of his son’s to arrange his funeral and ask a respected lady if he may be buired besides her father and her husband in her house, he asked if he could be buried besides his friends. She had tears in her eyes and she agreed. The son came back with news of her agreement but the leader insisted that she be asked again before his burial.

Matters in life and death are dealt with appropriate manners and clear reason. In life there is reason to not be extreme or neglectful. In death or the dying moments there is reason to not be extreme or neglectful. When you desire something, it is not appropriate to overlook the needs of others or pressure them to unwillingly give you what you want. It is important to speak clearly so that people know you, so that they know your interests and intentions and your character.

A leader should know his community. People should know their community. People should be able to speak to people who might help them in the community.

The attacker was a slave who came and complained that his owner asks too much wealth from him and that this is hard for him. He was told that he should be good to his master, he was angry with this response and said that the mercy of the leader is for everyone except him. It was many days later that the attack took place and during this time the leader went to the master of the slave and rebuked him for hardships to his slaves. After the attack had taken place, the leader rebuked the slave’s master again.

Injustices are acted upon. It is better to know and act upon injustices even if they have not happened to you. Not all injustices can be prevented, no one is master of their destiny but it is better to live connected and with compassion and reason.
